Many people don’t even consider a long-distance relationship thinking it is too hard emotionally or financially. While these relationships are not for the faint-hearted for those who do take the leap into a long-distance relationship and find the one whom their soul loves (Song of Songs 3:4), there’s often another challenge that awaits them: long-distance engagement.
For most couples in this situation, the majority of marriage preparation and wedding plans are being done while still living long-distance. Is it hard? Yes Is it possible? Absolutely. Here are some tips should you find yourself in a similar situation preparing for marriage while living long distance.
- Make marriage prep a priority. This is really important. Go on a reputable Catholic marriage preparation course. There are many out there, check which ones are recognised by your Diocese. Attend an NFP course, again this can be done online, but if you have the opportunity to do this in person, all the better. If your parish offers marriage- led catechesis, definitely attend. Try to find a good practising Catholic mentor couple and one willing to meet virtually. If there is an opportunity to attend an engaged retreat, that is worth checking out. Seek out a good priest to help guide you in marriage preparation and give spiritual direction, this is very worthwhile doing.
- Continue to meet up in person if possible. This is very important. Communicate a fair solution, particularly where finances are involved.
- Accept help from others with wedding preparations. Depending on where you are getting married, accept the help from family and friends. Set a budget and stick to the budget. Always remember that marriage preparation should always be the focus of the engagement and not solely just wedding planning.
- God is at the centre. Read spiritual books regularly, pray together often and live a sacramental life. Trust that God will give you the grace to persevere. This is a grace-filled time leading to a blessed life together.
Trust all the desires of your heart to the Lord and keep praying to the saints.
